For Venues and Teams
What is SoundSystem Live?
SoundSystem Live delivers your venue's live audio to every fan's own phone and earbuds in real time, in step with the action on the field. Each fan receives a circuit, a direct managed connection for every fan, through Synchronous Narrowcasting on the Virtual Audio Backbone, Backbone Broadcast's cloud-native audio fabric. Fans choose the authorized feeds they want: the main broadcast, native-language commentary, translations, descriptive audio, or special programming. SoundSy
Will the radio call match the play in front of me?
Yes. Live play-by-play arrives in under 300 milliseconds typical and under 500 milliseconds specified, subject to source and network conditions. Every listener on a channel hears the same instant, phone to phone and section to section.
What do we have to buy, and how soon can we go live?
Nothing, and by your next event. Zero hardware costs, no CapEx: no venue servers, transmitters, or receivers to buy, install, refresh, or retire. You send us the audio you already produce, we provision the rest from the cloud, and fans bring their own phones and earbuds. We work with what you already have.
What happens when 70,000 people hit the Wi-Fi at halftime?
SoundSystem Live bonds Wi-Fi and 5G. On iPhone, each circuit travels over both paths at the same time, so one network can falter while the audio carries on; Android devices currently use one path at a time. Bonding delivers roughly 200 times the reliability of Wi-Fi alone or 5G alone. Each circuit uses about 30 kbps, light enough to stay clear of peak-time congestion. Behind it, hot standby servers on opposite sides of the United States, tested in live conditions, pair with t
How does it sound?
Clear, even when the crowd roars. SoundSystem Live delivers 48 kHz, high-quality Opus audio directly to fans' earbuds, preserving the clarity and detail of live commentary. Fans follow the action without depending on distant loudspeakers or straining to hear a broadcast over the surrounding crowd.
Why is an individual circuit to each phone better than a fast streaming signal?
A streaming signal travels as best-effort HTTP segments, and each listener's playback lands wherever their network path, buffer, and phone put it, drifting further apart as the game goes on. SoundSystem Live runs a stateful RTP session for each fan, with drift-free timestamps, adaptive jitter control, and continuous synchronization, so every listener on a channel hears the same instant. Each circuit is known, managed, and confirmed for the life of the session. A CDN can tell
Can we offer more than one channel?
As many as you want: home radio call, Spanish broadcast, additional languages, assistive listening, in-venue PA, a women's broadcast, a premium mix for suites. Every fan gets a personal circuit to the team's audio fabric, with access to every channel the team offers. Channels run independently, each carrying its own content, with no spectrum license and no limit on how many you run.
How does SoundSystem Live support accessibility?
SoundSystem Live supports assistive listening for Blind, Low Vision, and Hard of Hearing fans, delivered as a circuit to each fan's own phone and earbuds. No receivers to distribute, charge, or clean, and no existing ADA system required. Venues can produce dedicated descriptive audio on a separate Backbone production station, or carry a channel compatible with and fed by the venue's existing ADA assistive listening system.
Can fans listen at road games, or from outside our market?
Yes. The geofence covers the venue and its immediate surroundings and retargets from the cloud, so your traveling fans hear your call in the visiting venue with nothing to pack. Beyond the venue, a station can reach fans in other markets where rights permit, with certain live programs geographically restricted and independently licensed programming distributed worldwide at other times.
Is this only for sports?
SoundSystem Live serves concerts, theme parks, conferences, festivals, and any live event where an audience wants the audio in their ears, scaling to 100,000 or more simultaneous listeners.
Beyond Game Day
What happens between games?
Game day lasts three hours. Your station runs all week. Programs and advertising run on broadcast automation under team control, and a host goes live from the venue, from home, or anywhere with a good internet connection. When a live program ends or its feed drops, automatic evergreen failover keeps the station on the air.
Can our team run its own stations?
Your team already owns what a broadcast network needs: a brand fans love, talented broadcasters, stories worth telling, sponsors, and fans in every time zone. The Virtual Audio Backbone turns those assets into your own worldwide family of stations, on the air 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. A flagship for team news and personalities, a Spanish station, an accessibility station, a women's sports station, an international station, a community station; each with its own identit
How do sponsors and the team benefit?
Every station adds year-round inventory the team schedules and sells: spots, sponsored series, named features, live-event packages, and podcasts. SoundSystem Live imposes no streaming-service pre-roll before listening begins. Backbone reports listening in aggregate by station and program to support sponsor proposals and renewals, and personal listener information stays with the team and its app. The team controls the programming. The team controls the advertising.
How far does one production go?
An interview airs live on the flagship, runs in excerpt on a language station, becomes a podcast, goes out in syndication to participating broadcasters, and feeds social clips. One production serves several audiences and several sponsors.
For Stations and Broadcasters
We own an AM/FM station. What does the Virtual Audio Backbone do for us?
Keep the tower. Sell the building. A complete professional station fits on a table or a lap: a laptop, a mixer, microphones, and an internet connection. Call-in phones, remote talent, automation, streaming, podcasting, and live or recorded syndication to AM/FM, digital, and satellite broadcasters all run in the cloud.
Will it work with our existing broadcast chain?
Yes. The radio call is forked at the stadium before it leaves for your station, so your codec, transmitter path, and commercial insertion stay as they are. Backbone works with compatible existing, standards-based contribution equipment and production workflows, including network truck feeds, venue PA, and mic mixes.
About Working With Backbone
Can we start small?
Start with one station. For many venues the first station is assistive listening; for others it is a continuously operating flagship. Add a language, a podcast series, syndication, or in-venue listening as each audience justifies it, all on the same fabric. With no unnecessary edge equipment in the venue, a change of direction leaves no stranded hardware.
Who is Backbone Broadcast?
Backbone Broadcast (Backbone Networks Corporation) has built broadcast transport since 1990, from fiber optic networks to cloud-native broadcasting. Our customers run from the largest sports organizations and television station groups to junior high school radio stations, all on the same fabric. Backbone is employee-owned and self-funded, based in Boston, Massachusetts. We report to our customers.
How can we hear it for ourselves?
Live demonstrations and pilots are currently limited to qualified teams, venues, and stations. With a brief assisted connection from compatible existing broadcast equipment, Backbone demonstrates SoundSystem Live with your own program on an ordinary smartphone. No venue distribution server or new equipment purchase is required. Your broadcast. Your equipment. Our cloud. Contact us to qualify for a pilot.
